Lot 30

A KARABAGH 'BLOSSOM' CARPET
SOUTH CAUCASUS, 18th CENTURY

The shaded mid-blue field with a bold overall harshang design of flaming palmettes, rosettes, rounded palmettes, and floral panels issuing arabesques, in a tan border of serrated lozenges divided by triangular motifs between charcoal-grey hooked vine and minor zig-zag stripes, corroded brown, light overall wear, a few repairs.
14ft.9in.x7ft.1in. (449cm.x215cm.)

This carpet has a classic large scale rendering of the ever popular harshang design which was probably introduced to the Caucasus from Khorassan (see footnote to the Khorassan carpet sold in these Rooms, 16 October, 1997, lot 100). In contrast to most rugs from the Caucasus of this period, the present example is in remarkably full pile. The border is of a design not noted by Yetkin in her study of these carpets (Yetkin, Serare: Early Caucasian Carpets in Turkey, London, 1978, Vol. II, pp. 83-89).

Est.: £18,000-25,000, US$30,000-41,000

Sold for £27,600
