Lot 66
A BAKSHAISH RUG
NORTH WEST PERSIA, CIRCA 1900
The ivory field of bid Majnun design with a variety of flowering trees and shrubs together with occasional birds, in a medium brown rosette and mock-kufic border between dusty pink carnation spray stripes, slight wear in field, corroded black, minute crude repairs to creasline, slight loss at each end.
7ft.3in.x5ft.7in. (221cm.x170cm.)
This field design takes its name since the main feature is the weeping willow; a tree under which Majnun sat surrounded by the animals who were his only friends, wasting away until he finely died from his unrequited love for Layla, as described in the famous poem by Nizami.
