The Wooden Ware Bazaar

In the Asian Trade wooden ware bazaar we offer various domestic forms carved, turned and fabricated from the trees of the Central Anatolian countryside. These are Turkish but they appear to us very similar to artifacts from 17th century America and medieval England. We asked our supplier how old they were and he shrugged as only a Turkish dealer can. "How can one know," he replied. He pointed to the dough trough pictured here, "When I bought that a family was using it, but it might have been in their house for 150 years, how can one know?"

The Pottery Bazaar

Pottery is another medium that seems timeless in Turkey. One can go from the bazaar where everyday domestic pottery is sold to the most exclusive dealer in antiquities and see only the subtlest differences in form and appearance in the respective wares. Some of our pieces are simply made to do a job. In others, the maker paused for a magical moment to embellish a glaze with a little daub,
smear, scribe-scratch or impression of decoration.
